Nurse Genevieve

I just love this time of year. The days are still warm but the nights are starting to cool. Such a delicious change after the “hot summer nights”.
As we move from summer to autumn, and eventually to winter, you’ll notice that your skin, and in particular your lips, can become drier and even cracked. In this issue, I’ll be looking at our lips and how to keep them luscious over the cooler months.
Chapped or dry lips are caused by loss of moisture and natural oils in lip skin. This may be due to exposure to the sun, cold dry winds or even repeated licking.

You’ll be interested to know that there are two different schools of thought when it comes to the use of chap sticks and lip balms to prevent and treat dry, chapped lips. One school of thought is that lip balm use promotes healing and prevention of chapped lips. Another viewpoint is that lip balms lubricate but they do not hydrate. People apply lip balms constantly to dehydrated lips because it makes the lips feel slick and smooth, which they misinterpret as moisturised. The balm actually seals moisture out so that lips cannot absorb moisture from the air or the water we drink. It is far better to use a product, with butters and oils high on the ingredient list, which is designed to introduce moisture back in to the lips.
So this Autumn, why not try our OP Therapy “Leverage for lips” with Manuka, Sandalwood and SPF 15. Your lips will love it!!!
